WHY UNDERSTANDING YOUR GROWTH STAGE MATTERS

Everyone business wants growth. Whether that’s more opportunities, more customers, more visibility or more momentum.

But growth isn’t a single destination. It’s a journey, and businesses at different stages face very different challenges and that’s something we see time and time again.

A business that’s struggling to generate consistent enquiries often thinks it needs more marketing activity. A business that’s already generating leads believes the answer lies in doing more of what it’s already doing. Meanwhile, businesses with a strong market position can become so focused on maintaining success that they stop investing in what’s next.

Unless you understand where your business is today, it’s difficult to know what to prioritise tomorrow. That’s why we have launched our Summer Growth Getaway campaign.

Using a simple holiday analogy, we’ve launched the Summer Growth Getaway to help businesses better understand their position, reflect on what’s driving growth and identify where their focus should be next.

Some businesses are still packing.

There’s plenty of activity and plenty of ambition, but progress feels slower than it should. Teams are busy, marketing is happening and opportunities are appearing, but growth remains difficult to predict.

Others are waiting on the runway.

The direction is clearer and positioning is stronger. There’s growing confidence in who the business serves and where it’s heading. The building blocks for growth are there, but the challenge now is turning them into consistent momentum.

Further along the journey are businesses that are living the holiday.

They’re seeing the benefits of a more systematic approach to growth. Marketing is more consistent, opportunities arrive more regularly and there’s a clearer understanding of what drives results.

And then there are the businesses that have become the destination.

Their reputation creates demand. Customers actively seek them out. Their expertise is recognised and trusted. They’re not simply competing within their market, they’re helping shape it.

While every business is different, most will recognise elements of these stages in their own growth journey. The important thing isn’t whether you’re still packing or have become the destination everyone wants to visit, it’s understanding which stage feels most familiar.

The biggest challenge facing most businesses isn’t growth itself, it’s knowing where to focus their time, budget and energy. Too often, businesses find themselves trying to solve tomorrow’s problems before they’ve addressed today’s priorities.

For example, a business that is still working to define its positioning and target audience doesn’t need to be thinking about market leadership just yet. Equally, a business that is beginning to build momentum doesn’t necessarily need another change of strategy. And organisations with established market positions may find that their greatest opportunities lie not in generating more leads, but in strengthening their authority, influence and long-term reputation.

Growth is rarely about doing more, it’s about focusing on the things that matter most at the stage you’re in today.

For those that feel like they’re still packing, the answer is often clarity. Clarity around who they serve, how they create value and what sets them apart from competitors. It’s also about understanding the role marketing should play in supporting business objectives, ensuring that activity is aligned with strategy rather than simply reacting to opportunities as they arise.

For businesses that are on the runway, the priority is often consistency. By this stage, there is usually a clearer sense of direction, a stronger understanding of the target audience and growing confidence in the business’s position. The challenge is turning those foundations into sustained momentum.

It can be tempting to keep experimenting with new ideas or changing direction in search of faster results. However, growth at this stage is more likely to come from building on what is already working. That could mean committing to a content strategy for the long term, investing in regular customer engagement or strengthening lead nurturing processes to help convert interest into opportunities.

For businesses that are already living the holiday, the conversation starts to shift. Marketing is generating opportunities, systems are delivering results and there is a clearer understanding of what drives growth. The focus therefore becomes less about creating momentum and more about building authority.

This is often the point at which businesses begin investing more heavily in thought leadership, customer success stories, industry insights and visible expertise. The aim is not simply to be recognised as a capable supplier, but to become a trusted voice within the market and a business that customers actively want to engage with.

For those that have become the destination, attention naturally turns towards leadership and innovation. With a strong reputation already established, the challenge is maintaining relevance and continuing to create value in a changing market.

That means looking beyond immediate lead generation and asking bigger questions. How can the business continue to shape conversations within its sector? Where are the opportunities to challenge conventional thinking, introduce new ideas or strengthen its influence? And how can it ensure that the reputation it has worked hard to build continues to evolve alongside customer expectations and market demands?

At this stage, growth is often less about visibility and more about impact, ensuring the organisation remains the destination that customers, partners and even competitors look towards.

There is no single formula for growth. Every business is different, and every stage brings its own challenges and opportunities. The businesses that make the greatest progress are rarely the ones doing the most – they’re the ones focusing on the right things at the right time.

Understanding where you are today is the first step towards deciding where to go next. Because before you can reach your next destination, you need to know where you’re setting off from.
